Carcross hasn't had any dog control in five years |
It's been about five years since Carcross, located about 75 kilometers south of Whitehorse, had a dog control officer. The last one quit after being assaulted.
Ked James, one of the organizers behind the community's latest dog control program, says it's time to restore order over the community's dogs.
"We have set up a temporary facility at the local highway maintenance garage in Carcross," he says. "We will detain those dogs for a certain period of time we will also set up a posting at the local general store here."
James says if the dogs aren't claimed they'll be sent to Whitehorse.
For the RCMP in Carcross, the program is a beginning.
Corporal Eric Hendriks says sometimes there can be up to 40 dogs running loose.
"This initiative is going to spark people in the right direction as far as being a little more responsible in how they care for their animals," he says.
The dog-control program began April 30 and will run for four weeks.
