Correspondence:

The correspondence noted was an announcement of an upcoming fitness theory course sponsored by RPAY.

 

Treasurer’s report

In the absence of the treasurer, Donna briefly reviewed the financials and noted that there are a number of planned expenditures that will reduce the available cash, which now stands at $38,253.

 

President’s report

In lieu of a president’s report the meeting heard from Mike Kenny and Mike Templeton from the Yukon Government who spoke about wildland fire management and the fire smart program and initiatives that we can expect to see this year.  They answered questions and advised on how property owners can assess their own situation.  Information that they provided will be available at Community Society meetings in the future.

 

Old Business

a)     M’Clintock land lease – is for one year and requires a plan for future use to be submitted by August 1, 2004.  Members are encouraged to think of potential uses that are recreational.  Some ideas were a community garden, farmers’ market and craft market place.

b)     Newsletter – is ready to being printed and will be mailed, costs being split between the Community Society and Fire Society.

c)      Winter Crime Prevention Proposal – Drew described the funding available from Youth Crime Prevention Yukon. 

A meeting is to be organized by Drew with young people and if there is insufficient interest, the proposal will not proceed.  Members offered a number of potential project ideas for Drew for consideration by the young people.  Society members are encouraged to contact Drew if they have ideas for projects that are appropriate for youth involvement in the community.

Perry Savoie moved that after soliciting interest from the youth of the community, Drew Whittacker draft a proposal to be approved by the Board before the submission deadline of October 17, 2003.  Seconded by Pat Healy.  Carried.

 

Committee Reports

d)     Building Committee – Lucy reported on the current status of the site assessment.  Ferguson Simek Clark (FSC), the consultants, expect to have a report ready by the end of October.  At that point the findings will be presented at a community meeting.  The next stage of the project requires funding to engage a consultant to produce an overall site plan including architectural design

Lucy moved that the Community Society formally approach the Yukon Government, Sports and Recreation Department, to request capital funds for the next stage of the Community Centre Construction Project based on the findings of the FSC site assessment report.  Seconded by Drew.  Carried.

 

e)     Ice Rink –

Ø   Shed repair is on hold

Ø   Puck Board may be replaced this fall if paving is complete.

Ø   Paving – Perry reported that Skookum may be available to pave the rink in the next two weeks. 

Perry moved that the Community Society proceed with a Community Development Fund application for less than $20,000 for paving of the rink.  Seconded by Blair.  Carried.

 

f)        Playground – Lucy reported that Derrick Whelan has performed clean up and various duties around the playground.  Garbage can and recycling containers are in place.  She is hoping to organize the construction of a retaining wall before winter.

g)     Yard Sale –was held in the Fire Hall on September 20.  The turn out was disappointing and the net contribution to the Society is likely to be about $150 after expenses.  

h)      Website – nothing new

 

New Business

i)        Election of board member -  With the resignation of Jan Milner from the Board due to their relocation, nominations will be solicited and an election to fill her position will ensue next meeting.

j)        Hiring a recreation employee – The Society was advised by Sports and Rec of the Yukon Government that we are eligible to apply for funds to support the hiring of an employee to organize community recreation.  Up to $15,000 is available for a community, based on matching funds from the community.

Perry moved that the Community Society apply for $10,000 from Sports and Recreation Yukon to hire a recreation employee for 2004 – 2005, and that the Society be prepared to match that sum as required.  Seconded by Mike Larsen.  Carried.

k)      Christmas Party – To be held December 6.  A committee is in place and organizing is underway.

l)        Marsh Lake Loppett  - tenth anniversary of the event is to be held in February 2004 and the organizers suggest that a dance would enhance the event.  Pat suggested that a committee be struck to organize a dance if the Society wishes to pursue this option.

m)   Upcoming events – regular volley ball games are held at Golden Horn School

n)      Members were reminded that Patrick Rouble, MLA, will hold a meeting on September 25, 2003.
